What inspired you to start studying Arabic?
I have always been interested in Arabic, as it is a beautiful language and I have lived and traveled in many places all over the region. I decided that while I was in Egypt was going to really learn some Arabic this time, formally. I have picked up a lot just from being in the region, but I really wanted to dig in and get the foundations of which I can build upon. As soon as I asked some friends here where to take Arabic classes, it was unanimous the UCAN was the place to go. AND I must admit, it was a great decision.

What has your experience been like at UCAN?
My experience at UCAN has been wonderful. The team is flexible, communicative and quite organized. The text books and the lessons are well-prepared, easy to follow and well scaffolded. I have had the chance to work with both Teacher Marina and Teacher Mohammed and they are equally great. It has been a great experience and I am learning Arabic, reading, writing, listening and speaking!

Tell us one of your favorite experiences or memories at UCAN?
I have been taking classes here for just over one month. I think that my favorite experience thus far is when I began to read words. Starting with the alphabet seems a bit daunting, but through my teacher's great direction and lessons, I am now beginning to understand quickly and starting to read words. It was like a light bulb went off. I have tried to do this before on my own to no avail, so it is really exciting to get to this point.

How has this program impacted your daily life or career?
The program has definitely helped me to get around in Cairo. I now speak more confidently when shopping, at a restaurant, making phone calls, etc. I am excited to continue to improve. It has not really affected my career just yet, however, working in international development, I believe that understanding a base level of Arabic will inevitably make me more competitive and I will be able to create closer relationships through language. It feels really great to be able to communicate with colleagues, friends and people in Arabic, at least try to. 🙂

What would you tell someone who is considering studying at UCAN? What should other potential students know?
If you have a desire to study Arabic here in Egypt I would say first of all, come to UCAN. The classes are flexible, great teachers, organized, communicative and you really feel supported. Go into each class with a positive attitude and have fun while making mistakes and sounding silly. Study after your class and between classes to get the most out of it. Communicate with your teachers your personal needs in language learning and do not be afraid to ask questions. But really, UCAN has been great, I encourage you to join if you are even a little bit interested.
